Texas Republican Susan Wright Advances to Runoff in Race for US House Seat

Wright entered the race following the dying of Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas), who died after testing optimistic for COVID-19 in February.

Either Republican candidate Jake Ellzey or Democrat Jana Sanchez will be a part of Wright within the runoff. Ellzey had garnered 354 extra votes with nearly all precincts reporting, in accordance with the tally early Sunday.

A runoff is triggered when no candidate will get a majority of the vote.

The race to fill the vacant seat representing the Texas sixth Congressional District drew 23 candidates. Each one drew a minimum of 102 votes.

Republican Brian Harrison was in fourth with 8,476 votes, whereas Democrat Shawn Lassiter garnered slightly below 7,000.

The seat has been held by Republicans for many years, however Democrats hoped to flip it after Trump drew a smaller margin of votes within the district in 2020 than in 2016.

Democrats have seen their majority within the House of Representatives dwindle significantly, after Republicans flipped 15 seats within the decrease chamber within the 2020 election.
