Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas begged Monday for volunteers from companies inside his division to hurry to the border to assist with an “overwhelming” surge of unlawful immigrants.
In an electronic mail to division staff, Mr. Mayorkas stated he was copying an concept the Trump administration utilized in 2019, over the last surge.
The electronic mail is one other indication that regardless of public pronouncements on the contrary, the Biden administration believes it’s going through a disaster on the border.
“Today I activated the Volunteer Force to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as they face a surge in migration along the Southwest Border,” Mr. Mayorkas wrote in his observe.
He pointed to the 900 staff that stepped ahead in 2019 and requested for the same effort this time.
“I also realize these are uncertain times and being away from home may be concerning. But today your colleagues need assistance carrying out their mission to help others, and DHS is going to support you while deployed,” Mr. Mayorkas wrote.
He didn’t say precisely what that meant, however stated “your health and wellbeing will remain priorities.”
Mr. Mayorkas has declined to label the surge of migrants a “crisis,” as a substitute calling it a problem.
Officials on the border, although, say they’ve little doubt the surge in numbers, and the return of catch-and-release insurance policies, is a disaster.
